While general practice offers a prime opportunity to promote physical activity (PA) among middle-aged and older adults, a persistent obstacle lies in attracting the individuals who would gain the most from these interventions; they often demonstrate the least willingness to engage in research. By systematically reviewing the published literature on physical activity interventions in general practice settings, this study aimed to explore strategies used to recruit patients and describe the traits of the study populations.
PubMed, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were among the seven databases examined. Primary care-recruited randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of adults aged 45 years or older were the sole trials considered for inclusion in the analysis. Within the systematic review process, the PRIMSA framework guided two researchers in independently examining titles, abstracts, and full articles. The tools employed for data extraction and synthesis were adapted by drawing upon existing research on inclusivity in recruitment.
The search process produced 3491 studies; 12 of these studies were ultimately chosen for inclusion in the review. In sub-Saharan Africa, the demand for rice has experienced an unparalleled recent surge, but its production is unfortunately afflicted by the widespread presence of blast disease. Insight into blast resistance in African rice varieties, adapted for cultivation, offers crucial data for farmers and rice breeders. We grouped African rice genotypes (n=240) into similarity clusters, employing molecular markers that target known blast resistance genes (Pi genes; n=21). Using greenhouse-based assays, we then tested the response of 56 representative rice genotypes against 8 African isolates of Magnaporthe oryzae, isolates that varied in virulence and genetic background. Markers were used to delineate five blast resistance clusters (BRCs) of rice cultivars, each exhibiting distinct foliar disease severity. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the Pi50 and Pi65 genes correlated with decreased blast severity; conversely, the Pik-p, Piz-t, and Pik genes were associated with enhanced susceptibility. In the highly resistant cluster BRC 4, all rice genotypes exhibited the Pi50 and Pi65 genes, uniquely associated with a decrease in foliar blast severity. IRAT109, characterized by the presence of Piz-t, showed resistance to seven African M. oryzae isolates, whereas ARICA 17 was found to be susceptible to a full eight isolates.
